Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

- What is the make and model of your PC?

- Do you get any error message?

Meanwhile, I suggest you to run Printer Troubleshooter and check.

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with Printer. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your Printer. Refer these steps:

  1. Press Windows key +X, select Control panel.
  2. Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons.
  3. Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel.
  4. Run the Printer troubleshooter.

For information refer the below link.

Hope the information helps, if you have any further queries, feel free to post. We are here to assist you.

Guru,

Thank you for the response. I ran the troubleshooter as you suggested but that didn't fix the problem. When I open devices-printers the Laserjet 4 is listed but it has 'Default,Error' next to it. also, in device manager the printer queue is there for the Laserjet 4 but it is not listed in printers.

My motherboard is an Asus M5A97 EVO with an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Processor.

This problem happens with anything I try to print to the Laserjet 4.

I get a popup saying 'printer error'.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

I suggest you to go to the manufacturer’s website and check for any updated drivers available there. If so, try to install them and check if it fix the issue.

If no updated drivers available then try installing the available drivers i.e. Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 drivers in compatibility mode.

Follow the steps below on how to install driver in compatibility mode:

1. Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website and save it on your local disk.
2. Right click on the setup file of the driver and select “Properties”.
3. Select “Compatibility” Tab.
4. Place a check mark next to “Run this program in Compatibility mode” and select operating system from the drop down list.
5. Let the driver install and then check the functionality.

Hope the information helps, if you have any further queries, feel free to post. We are here to assist you.

Guru,

There aren't any drivers available from HP for the Laserjet 4. I spoke to an HP tech support rep and he said that the last driver from HP for the Laserjet 4 was for Windows 3.1. Apparently, Microsoft has bundled support for this printer in Windows. I had support for the HP Laserjet 4 when I migrated to Windows 10 but one of the later updates killed it. The HP rep said there might be a way to extract the Laserjet 4 driver from the Windows 7 x64 install disk but he wasn't sure. Any help with this?

I have the same problem as JohnMerritt_65; my HP LaserJet 4 worked fine in Windows 10 until around December 10 when it quit working. I ran Windows 10 Trouble shooter and got (1) 'Print spooler service is experiencing a problem,' and (2) 'Isolate printer drivers from printer service.' So, any suggestions on how to implement those fixes?

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

The Full solution is custom drivers and/or software created for select products. 'HP Full feature software and driver', 'HP Full feature driver', or 'HP Full software and drivers', offer a complete solution including full printer software functionality and the most advanced features available for the printer, and does not require additional HP software. Recommended where available, the Full solution is either included on the HP Windows 7 CD/DVD that came with a new printer or is available for download from www.hp.com/go/support . Can be installed via USB or network.

Download Windows 7 drivers and run it in compatibility mode.

Thank you for your reply. I have installed a parallel to USB adapter for the Laserjet 4 and now it is working fine. I installed it as a virtual 001 USB port. It looks like Microsoft has dropped support for parallel printers in Window 10. Kind of strange since the Laserjet 4 worked fine when I first migrated to Windows 10 but a subsequent update killed the parallel support. Thank you for your help.

Abby43: I too was able to make my HP Laserjet 4 work with Windows 10 thanks to the JohnMerritt_65 fix. I did it by connecting the printer to my PC using a 6-ft Centronix-to-USB cable that I got for $20 from my local computer supply store. I had been told I would need to buy a new printer or backup from Windows 10 to 7. Neither had to be done because of the cable. I've used the printer for three decades, get several years of use from one toner cartridge, and consume about 25-lbs of paper annually, which is why I choose to keep on using the old dependabsle Laserjet 4.
